What makes the Islamic Seminary Unique

What are the most important features that distinguish the Islamic Seminary and the Marjaeya from the rest of the religious institutions from different faiths and schools of thought?

There are two primary distinguishing factors of the school of the Holy Household (a).

1) True education and beneficial knowledge – built on the emphasis of strong proofs, a high standard of scrutiny, and strong critique, for the purpose of reaching truth and realizing our religious obligations. The Imams (a), and their followers, were known for this from the earliest times. They stood out from the rest as this characteristic was evident in their teachings as well as their discussions, gatherings, and conduct.

2) Sincerity and devotion in seeking knowledge and understanding, with the purpose of fulfilling one’s obligation and being relieved of liability before God – not to seek this world’s pleasures, or to obtain positions of power or monetary wealth. The Imams (a) represent the peak of devotion to God and manifest His calling and remembrance. Their followers are enlightened by their light. They see with the rays of their torch. Their existence is completed by the blessings that flow from their sacred emanations.

This school has persevered with these two foundations, under the care and patronage of the Ahlulbayt (a).

This, of course, does not mean that there have not been problematic incidents, as that is only natural with the absence of the immaculate leadership of the Ahlulbayt. However, what we intend to convey here is that the general direction of the seminaries do not go outside of these two foundations, by the blessings of the Holy Household (a) and the protection of the Awaited Imam (aj). If a seminary was to fail in respect to either of these two foundations, it would be seen to fail in being recognized as a seminary and in delivering what is expected and anticipated from it.

The relationship between the believers and the seminaries was built and grew on the basis of spirituality and sacredness, such that the Marja has a special place in the hearts and souls of the believers. He was seen as a representative of the Imam (aj) – who is the embodiment of sanctity and holiness.

There are a few things that helped keep this relationship between the seminary and the people alive.

Firstly, the seminary’s educational setup is quite unique. It does not mandate a particular system in seminary studies. Every individual is free to learn based on his own persuasion within the general seminary framework. No individual is forced into adopting a particular schedule, instructor, or course. The student of the seminary has complete autonomy in utilizing his skills and potential, just as he is responsible to fulfill his religious duties before God with due diligence and a clear conscience.

Secondly, the seminary is not subject to an authority that dictates the affairs of the seminary. There is no sole decision-making body that discerns who studies what subjects or who is allowed to climb the ranks of the seminary. From
